When the opportunity to manage The White River Inn presented itself, the lodge experienced a change in ownership. Yet, that was only one of the biggest challenges. The world, particularly the outdoor sporting industry, was still struggling with the logistical fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. New positions, responsibilities, and ownership all operate in the new reality of social distancing and sterilization. They embraced the challenge, passed with flyfishing colors, and have never looked back. Both acknowledge they are much happier today than in their prior careers. It was a risk they both said they were willing to take and understand that it was also a risk for the new owners. "When an opportunity comes, you must be willing to pull the trigger. Even when we're tired, we're still happier than ever." They may have yet to have had any prior experience running a 5-star lodge, but you would never know it. Steve is an engaging conversationalist and a wealth of knowledge. And Elizabeth is a wonderful host and the commander of the kitchen. Every meal is prepared with great care and is nothing short of excellent. They love what they do, and it shows. Admittedly, it's not all sunshine and roses. Steve notes, "You can't have a bad day. You don't want to be the reason why someone doesn't enjoy their stay even when you may not be having such a good day. Daily life can have its challenges because we live here. It's our home." Prior to stepping into their current roles, the Sonnamakers had some trepidation about what they would need to know. There was also the very real concern that they could get to the lodge and find they didn't like the job and its constant demands on time and energy. However, what they have found is just the opposite. They love their roles, the nature of the work, and are looking forward to continuing to strive to make The White River Inn the best that it can be.
